So, what is the cheapest time to visit New Zealand?
The cheapest time to vacation in New Zealand is late May.
Most destinations are less expensive when the least amount of people want to go. Some call it the off-season.
In New Zealand, the off or non-peak season is May through October, when temperatures are cooler, it rains more, making it less conducive to spending time on the beach and hiking. The worst time to be in New Zealand is July to October, when most of the country is windy and wet.
The thing about New Zealand weather is winter is cold but rarely freezing. Summer is hot but seldom unbearably so.
If a little unpredictable wet weather doesn’t bother you, June, July, and August may be the time to go. You’ll find cheaper fares and accommodations during this time.

Cheapest time to plan a trip to New Zealand other than late May:
- End of February to the end of March
- Mid-April to Mid-June
- Beginning of August to late October
- Middle of November to the beginning of December
Where is New Zealand?

New Zealand is a small island isolated in the South Pacific Ocean below Australia, the southwesternmost part of Polynesia.
It comprises two land masses: The South Island and the North Island. The climate ranges from subtropical in the north of the North Island to temperate/cool temperatures in the South Island.
Before buying tickets to New Zealand, make sure you know what temperature suits you, what climate you expect, and what type of activities you have your heart set on, and plan accordingly.

There is so much to do in New Zealand for such a small country, and some activities may not be available if you plan to go during the off-season.
However, if your main goal is to keep expenses on the lower side while visiting this scenic, diverse and magical destination jam-packed with stunning natural landscapes (there really is not a bad time to find yourself in this beautiful country), then go in the off-season and enjoy what the off-season has to offer.
The Pros of Winter in New Zealand
During the winter months, June, July, and August, there are cool things to do and see in New Zealand you might not get when visiting during the more popular months.
First off, and obviously a pro to any traveler visiting New Zealand in the cooler months, there are fewer people to contend with. That’s a plus in our book.
Secondly, it isn’t that cold.

Temperatures range between 53 degrees Fahrenheit to 60 degrees Fahrenheit (12°C – 16°C), but it can get wet so bring a rain jacket and appropriate footwear.
Even in cooler climates, there is plenty to see and do.
You’ll find great skiing and other winter activities in the Central Otago on South Island, where it snows. It does snow in New Zealand. The stunning mountains and atmosphere attract skiers and snowboarders from around the world.
Bonus, there are also countless natural hot springs across New Zealand to soak in after a day of skiing or just because it’s a holiday and you want a spa-feel in a hot pool, which will feel extra special during the colder temperatures during the winter months. Most are open all year-round.

When it’s not raining, the days are cool and crisp, ideal weather for long hikes, which New Zealand is known for.
The winter months are a time when you can see humpback whales migrate off the coasts of Kaikoura and the Bay of Islands.
If you’d like to avoid colder climates but still would like to travel to New Zealand in winter for cheaper fares and accommodations, go to the area north of Auckland called Northland; its nickname is “the winterless north” for its mild year-round climate.
